York Central development gets green light

The City of York Council's planning committee has approved the application put forward by partners Network Rail, Homes England and the Government Property Agency (GPA) to construct a six-storey, 195,000 sq ft government hub that will be home to up to 2,600 civil servants in the North of England.

Together with ground-floor retail and auxiliary space, the development will include 135,000 square feet of office space. The building has 230 bike stalls, a planted pedestrian area, solar panels, air source heat pumps, and a green roof. The larger York Central project is expected to include up to one million square feet of office, retail, and hospitality space, 2,500 new dwellings (20% of which will be affordable), renovations to York Railway Station, and an expanded National Railway Museum. Partners in the private sector McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate will develop it. scheduled to be finished in 2027 or 2028.
