J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd has started the groundwork on the Chennai port to Maduravoyal elevated expressway project in Tamil Nadu, India.
The Chennai Port to Maduravoyal elevated expressway project, initially launched in 2009 with a budget of INR 58.8 billion (USD 710 million), has commenced groundwork near Casino Theatre in the city center. J Kumar Infraprojects has secured the Chennai Elevated Corridor project from NHAI, with a total project cost of INR 35.7 billion (USD 430 million), covering land acquisition and river restoration charges. The endeavor involves constructing a new dual-tier 4-lane elevated corridor from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal in Tamil Nadu.
The project, comprising four packages under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Yojana in EPC mode, attracted 13 bidders, with J Kumar and Afcons being the sole contenders for all four packages. The packages are defined from 0.342 km to 4.604 km, 4.604 km to 9,700 km, 9.700 km to 14.185 km, and 14.185 km to 20.223 km. The revised plan outlines a 20.6 km double-decker corridor from Madurvoyal on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway to Napier Bridge, adjacent to Chennai port's gate number. The first tier accommodates light motor vehicle traffic between Koyambedu and Chennai Port, featuring ramps at 13 locations. The second tier is designated for heavy motor vehicles between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal. The project aims to facilitate efficient cargo movement to and from the port, allowing entry and exit through the port's southern end in the city center, contrasting with the current route through the port's northern end in Royapuram.
