San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has unveiled plans to renovate and expand Terminal 3 West which will see modern bag-drops, new security checkpoints as well as more space for food, beverage and retail concessions.
SFO has initiated plans for a US$2.6 billion renovation of one of its terminals through the Terminal 3 West Modernisation project. It is aiming to obtain LEED Platinum status on the strength of green features such as solar panels, low-carbon steel and concrete, water recycling and dynamic glazing.
Originally proposed in 2020 but postponed that same year, the project will add 200,000 square feet of space. For the increased number of international passengers arriving at Terminal 3, a new Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile connector will offer direct access to the Customs Hall in the international terminal. The project also includes a new exterior façade, expanded check-in areas with advanced self-bag drop systems, and additional security checkpoints, including one on the mezzanine level for AirTrain passengers. The existing western half of Terminal 3, which is 650,000 square feet, will get an expanded security checkpoint and new passenger amenities. The new space that this project will create will also allow for an expansion of the food, beverage, and retail sectors of the airport. The project also includes a new six-story building which will house both airline lounges and operational office space.
The project is being built by Turner Construction to a design by two local consultants: Gensler and TEF Design Renovation. The renovated and expanded western half is expected to open in fall 2027, with the six-story building opening in early 2028. A renovated check-in lobby on the eastern end of Terminal 3 is expected to open in early 2029.
