The East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has started construction of the Haneda Airport Access Line in Japan.
The new airport line, to be operated by East Japan Railway Co., will allow passengers to travel the approximately 14-km journey in 18 minutes without the need to switch trains, compared with about 30 minutes on existing lines. The company will accomplish the following tasks:
- Tokaido Line connecting section: It involves connecting the disused Oshio Line to the Tokaido Line through a short section. Cut-and-cover and shield tunnels will be constructed near Tamachi Station, Tokyo, by reconfiguring existing tracks and creating space. The Yamanote Line draw-out track will be removed, and the Yamanote Line outer track, Keihin-Tohoku Line south-bound track, and Tokaido Line in-bound track will be relocated;
- Oshio Line renovation section: It involves utilizing existing infrastructure from the Oshio Line while ensuring its safety and functionality through thorough inspections and necessary repairs;
- Modification section in Tokyo Freight Terminal: JR East will develop a car storage track and maintenance base track on its 23,000 m2 plot in the Tokyo Freight Terminal for the Haneda Airport Access Line operation;
- New Access Line section: A new track will be constructed from the Tokyo Freight Terminal to Haneda Airport New Station, passing under public facilities, roads, and canals. The 4.2 km double-track shield tunnel will be approximately 50 m below ground at its deepest point; and
- Haneda Airport New Station: An underground station will be constructed between Terminals 1 and 2 of the airport, featuring a single island platform with two tracks. The platform will be approximately 12 m wide and 310 m long, situated on the first basement level for seamless access to Terminal 2.
The line will be operational by 2032.
