The White House has announced the Climate Smart Buildings Initiative that will utilize public-private partnerships (PPP) for the modernization of Federal buildings with aims to reduce energy costs, create jobs and cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The initiative plans to mobilize over US$8 billion of private sector investment to modernize facilities, to create and support nearly 80,000 jobs and to achieve up to 2.8 million metric tons of GHG reductions annually by 2030, equivalent to removing 600,000 gas-powered cars from the road. The modernization includes increasing on-site clean electricity generation, equipping the buildings with the latest clean energy technology, e.g. heat pumps, installing efficient lighting and insulation and installing electric vehicle supply equipment.
