Webuild has announced that Webuild and its consortium partner have been awarded a EUR616million (US$617) contract to design and build a section of the Palermo-Catania rail line in Italy.
The Lot 4b section includes the design and construction of 15 km of the new Nuova Enna-Dittaino railway, 8.5 km of which will pass through three tunnels and another 2 km through five viaducts. The project involves the construction of a train station at Enna and the modernization of the one at Dittaino. The project shall minimize the environmental impact of site construction activities through the reuse of 99% of all the earth excavated, the recovery and reuse of rain and industrial water, energy consumption efficiency as well as the use of solar panels. Webuild's share is 70% and its partner Pizzarotti is 30%.
The construction of Lot 4b will create 650 direct and indirect jobs and will affect the supply chain of 100 companies, the contract will be financed from Italy's National Plan for Recovery and Resilience, (PNRR in Italy), commissioned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) of the Italian state railway operator Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS).
