The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has granted an additional US$200 million in funding for the ongoing Rajasthan Secondary Towns Development Sector Project in India.
The project aims to improve water supply and sanitation systems in selected secondary towns, benefiting 68,098 households. This includes installing 1,451 km of water supply pipes, and 1,110 km of sewer pipes, and establishing three new water treatment plants. The improvements involve converting groundwater sources to surface water, replacing leaking pipes, installing new pipelines, connecting households with water meters, rehabilitating sewers, constructing sewage treatment plants, and connecting households to the sewage system.
ADB aims to develop water facilities for urban resilience and heritage-sensitive development in eight heritage towns. This involves reconstructing water parks with heritage value and using nature-based solutions for climate resilience. Additionally, around 20 heritage structures will be rehabilitated to attract more tourists. The project encourages private sector investment in water services in Rajasthan's manufacturing areas, establishing dedicated pipe networks for treated wastewater to industrial facilities.
