The US House has received strong backing and support from the federal and state governments for the 'Restore Our Parks' bill. The bill will encourage the use of public-private partnerships (PPP) to complete backlog of almost US$ 12 billion in deferred maintenance projects from the National Parks Service.
The repairs mostly consist of mundane leaky roofs and rotting wood at visitors centers, or trails that have been closed for repairs. Passengers elevators at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico is also on the list. The biggest repairs projects include repairs on the most iconic park properties in the United States. The list includes US$ 655 million in infrastructure repairs to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Arlington Memorial Bridge to Arlington Cemetery requires repairs of US$ 250 million for the deteriorated road deck of the bridge.
National Park Service parks and museums aren't just beautiful spots for visitors. They're also an economic engine and job creator for the areas around the parks. More than 318 million people visit National Park Services sites each year, about 330,000 jobs are created, including park employees and the staffs at grocery stores and other establishments in gateway communities that serve park visitors. The bursting no of visitors of 419 national parks are putting stress on the already-aging facilities.
The 'Restore Our Parks' bill would pay US$ 6.5 billion for repairs to U.S. national parks using oil and gas tax royalties from drilling on federal land.
