The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has committed to grant more than US$5 billion to the final phase of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s (VTA) Silicon Valley Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Extension Project.
The extension aims to create jobs, boost the economy, improve connectivity, and reduce emissions. While the US$5 billion is significant, it doesn't cover the entire project cost (estimated at US$12.7 billion). The VTA needs to find additional funding before finalizing the project.
The new rail line will be Santa Clara County's largest infrastructure project and is expected to serve nearly 55,000 passengers each weekday by 2040. Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation has a 10-year contract to manage and oversee construction starting in 2024.
