Lane, the US subsidiary of the Webuild Group, has won a new USD 110 million contract to build the “Newport News Segment” of the I-64 Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Project” in Hampton, Virginia, USA.

The project involves expanding and restructuring I-64 by introducing an Express Lane in both directions. Throughout 10.2 miles from Bland Boulevard to the I-664 interchange (exit 264), the existing high occupancy vehicles (HOV) lane in each direction will transition into an Express Lane, running alongside three unrestricted general-purpose lanes. For the remaining 1.3 miles between the I-664 interchange and Armistead Avenue, one general-purpose lane will be converted into an Express Lane in each direction, in addition to the two unrestricted general-purpose lanes. Furthermore, the project encompasses the replacement of two bridges and the rehabilitation of six others, along with the installation of overhead signs and tolling gantries. Completion of the project is anticipated by spring 2027.

The latest contract comes after the recent disclosure of securing a USD 299 million project in Florida (100% Lane) aimed at expanding the Seminole Expressway/SR 417. The HREL project, inclusive of the Newport News Section, is a crucial component, envisioning the establishment of an uninterrupted 72 km network of new lanes along I-64. This expansion spans from the west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the intersection leading to the I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake.
