The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) has awarded two large electrical projects in Peru.
Two significant electrical initiatives are set to expand the 500 kV high voltage lines across seven regions in Peru, adding over 1,000 km in length. This expansion will provide reliable electricity to more than three million residents in Cajamarca, Huánuco, La Libertad, San Martín, Amazonas, Lambayeque, and Piura. Interconnection Eléctrica SA secured both projects with a combined annual operation and maintenance cost of US$83.5 million. This amount will be disbursed once the lines become operational. The projects, operating under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, entail a 30-year concession period for commercial operation, inclusive of the infrastructure development time of 66 months for each project.
The two electrical projects which are awarded include:
- The 500 kV Link from Huánuco to Tocache, Celendín, and Trujillo establishes an alternative energy transmission route between central and northern Peru. Originating from the Huánuco 500 kV Substation, it will connect the new Tocache and Celendín 500 kV Substations before linking to the Trujillo 500 kV Substation. In the event of a contingency, energy will be distributed from the Trujillo 500 kV arrival substation to connected substations: La Niña, Piura, and Chimbote. This project spans across the regions of Huánuco, San Martín, Cajamarca, and La Libertad.
- The 500 kV Celendín-Piura Link will establish an alternative route for electrical energy transmission between the central and far northern regions of Peru. Beginning at the Celendín 500 kV Substation, it will connect this new substation to the Piura Nueva 500 kV Substation. In the event of contingencies, energy will be channeled from the Piura Nueva 500 kV arrival substation to linked 500 kV substations, including La Niña and Trujillo. Additionally, it will enhance reliability and augment transfers in the Peru-Ecuador 500 kV interconnection. This initiative encompasses the departments of Cajamarca, Amazonas, Lambayeque, and Piura.
