Trunk line of Cebu BRT to be completed by August 2024

The World Bank has disclosed that Package 1 of the PHP 17 billion (US$ 291.5 million) Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has achieved a progress of 64% and may be “substantially completed” by August 2024.

Package 1 of the Cebu BRT Project refers to the main line connecting Cebu South Bus Terminal to the Cebu Provincial Capitol via Osmeña Boulevard. Construction for Package 2, covering South Road Properties to Brgy. Mambaling via N. Bacalso Avenue is expected to begin in October 2024. The Resettlement Action Plan for Civil Works Package 2 has been approved by the World Bank, which is the primary financial supporter of the Cebu BRT, the first public mass transport project in Cebu.

The project consists of six components:

  1. The first component will finance goods, works, and services for detailed design, construction and supervision of BRT infrastructure, and corridor traffic management systems.
  2. Component two will finance goods, works, and services for intelligent transportation system components, traffic management, and road and intersection upgrades across Cebu City.
  3. Component three will finance studies, training, and capacity building to support bus improvements and BRT application in the Philippines, as well as prepare of feasibility study and detailed design of the proposed Metro Manila BRT system.
  4. The fourth component will finance goods, works, and services to foster the integration of land development and the BRT system in Cebu City by establishing physical connections from stations and terminals to major trip attractors and generators.
  5. Component five will finance technical assistance, equipment, and other operational support for monitoring project performance and results.
  6. Finally, component six will finance technical assistance, equipment, vehicles, office equipment, outreach activities, and other operational support for the management of the implementation of BRT and related measures.
