Santiago Metro Authority has begun the trial run on the Santiago Metro Line 2 extension project in Chile.
This phase involves conducting operational tests with empty trains to assess the performance of the railway systems before their full operation. Throughout the trial period, the trains undergo testing at the intended operational speed for the Line 2 extension. Simultaneously, examinations are conducted on the installed systems within the trains in coordination with the Metro Control Center. Following the trial for trains and railway systems, the testing focus shifts to the stations. Comprehensive evaluations of various equipment systems take place, including elevators, escalators, closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), passenger entry and exit doors, Bip! Card sales and loading machines, and other systems across different station levels.
The Santiago Metro Line 2 extension, featuring new stations like El Bosque, Observatorio, Copa Lo Martínez, and Hospital El Pino, will significantly reduce travel time for San Bernardo residents to reach the center of Santiago, now taking only 27 minutes between Hospital El Pino and Los Héroes—a 32% reduction from the current 40-minute duration. With a substantial investment of US$409.2 million, the project includes the addition of 5.2 km of track and four new stations along the Av. Padre Hurtado axis, connecting the existing La Cisterna station to Hospital El Pino in San Bernardo.
Upon incorporation of the Line 2 extension into the system, the Santiago Metro will expand to a total of 143 stations distributed across seven lines, forming a comprehensive 149-km network. The trial period for both trains and stations is anticipated to continue until the Line 2 extension becomes operational, expected before the end of the year.
