India's largest major port, Kandla Port Trust invited global bids for setting up a container terminal at Tuna -Tekra near Kandla Port in March 2013. The port authority invited expression of interests from global majors for setting up the container terminal on build, operate and transfer basis for container vessels having capacity up to 18000 twenty-foot equivalent units.
Three bidders have submitted their expressions of interest for Kandla Port Trust new container terminal at Tuna near the Kandla Port. Samsung C&T Corporation has been reported by Indian newspapers to be among the three bidders for the project.
According to local sources, "not many players turned up for the KPT's container terminal project. Most of the leading players including Adani, Essar, Reliance, are either engaged in developing their own container terminals or have not expressed interest to file the bids."
Last year, Kandla Port Trust had appointed Mumbai-based marine consultancy provider, Zebec Marine Consultants and Services to prepare an initial techno-feasibility study of the project.
Kandla Port Trust is planning to set up a container terminal at Tuna-Tekra on build, operate and transfer basis for container vessels having capacity up to 18000 twenty-foot equivalent units.
The project will be developed on public private partnership basis with 30 years of concession period for the operator and the estimated value of the project is US$420 million (Rs 3,000 crores).
