The government of Ontario announces CAD28.5 billion transit project for the Greater Toronto Area

The Government of Ontario announced new funding for four new transit projects in the Greater Toronto Area. The project estimated cost is CAD28.5 billion and it is presumably the largest investment made for the new subway building projects.

Out of total CAD28.5 billion, the province is providing CAD11.2 billion and the government made commitments of CAD5 billion. This investment includes four projects: subway lines of the Ontario line, Yonge North Subway Extension, Scarborough Subway Extension, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension. 

The Ontario line is proposed to deal with the dangerous congestion on Line 1 and is scheduled to be operational by 2027 at an investment of CAD10.9 billion.

The Yonge North Subway Extension will connect the subway to one of the region's largest employment centres and is expected to be operational soon after Ontario line at an investment of CAD5.6 billion.

The Scarborough Subway Extension was proposed to better serve communities and is scheduled to be operational by 2030 at an investment of CAD5.5 billion.

The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will be mostly built underground to keep people and goods moving on the roadways is scheduled to be operational before 2031, last in all project at an investment of CAD4.7 billion.

The total estimated cost of the projects above is CAD26.7 billion, lower than funding announced by the government.
