Terna Group has announced its plans to double the capacity of an existing power transmission line between Italy and Greece.
The existing 300 km long 400 kV direct current connection has a bi-directional transport capacity of 500 MW, which allows energy exchanges between Italy and Greece, and the neighboring countries. The new 200 km of the submarine cable transmission line will provide an additional 500MW capacity allowing a 1GW capacity electricity transmission connection between both countries. The estimated investment value of the project is EUR750 million (US$786.53 million).
The existing line has been in operation for 20 years. It connects the Galatina electricity station in Leece, Italy to Arachthos power station in Greece via a 300 km long cable comprising 43 km of terrestrial cable, 160 km long submarine cable, and 110 km of overhead lines.
