Transport For Greater Manchester (TfGM), Wigan MBC, and Network Rail, have sought to appoint a suitably experienced Main Contractor for the Detailed Design, Construction, and Handover of the works at the agreed Golborne Station site.

The new station will be situated on the existing electrified track of the West Coast Mainline (WCML) near the former Golborne station site. It will be served by an hourly train service between Wigan North Western and Manchester Victoria. The Golborne project is part of the broader Wigan masterplan, which includes highway and public realm improvements aimed at optimizing the adjacent car park, improving traffic flow and junction layouts, and enhancing active travel and pedestrian facilities within the Golborne town center. TfGM has appointed WSP to complete the outline design which is due to be completed in September 2024.

A two-stage approach to the procurement and delivery of the Detailed Design to PACE ES5 and Construction Phase ES5 - ES8 is being implemented, as follows:

  • First Stage: Detailed Design to ES5/Form B 'Approved for Construction' (AFC) status to ascertain a fixed price lump sum for the construction works. This will also include the development of value engineering options, innovation, and constructability for the delivery of the four stations based on the completed ES4/Form A design.
  • Second Stage: the period of construction, entry into service, and hand back for the completed station based on the ES5/Form B approved design from the First Stage.

The deadline for showing interest is September 17, 2024.
