Eskom has launched a tender seeking a developer for a battery storage capacity project in South Africa.
The selected private partner will be responsible for designing, building and operating storage systems totaling 35 MW/140 MWh at its Melkhout substations, in Eastern Cape province, and a 1.5 MW/6 MWh storage system plus a 2.04 MW PV system at its Mier substation in Rietfontein, Northern Cape province.
Funding for the project will be provided by the African Development Bank and the New Development Bank. Projects are planned to be put into operation within 6 months, the maximum period is up to 8 months. Bidders will manage the projects and provide maintenance for five years. The tender is part of the first phase of the South African government's BESS initiative for 500 MW of energy storage.
