Southern Water has invited participation from potential investors and suppliers to design, construct, finance, operate, and maintain advanced sludge treatment facilities in Kent, UK.
The project includes the reorganization of bioresource (sludge) treatment facilities in Kent, aiming to streamline smaller treatment centers into two larger sites. Currently, the region processes approximately 42,000 tonnes of dry solids (TDS) of raw sludge annually. This includes un-screened, screened, un-thickened, thickened liquid, and screened dewatered cake sourced from various wastewater treatment works. The conventional digestion process is employed, followed by either maturation or liming of the treated sludge (Biosolids) for agricultural purposes. The generated biogas is utilized in combined heat and power (CHP) engines to produce heat and electricity, serving on-site needs or exported as electricity. The assignment involves replacing existing assets and increasing capacity to handle around 46,000 tonnes of dry solids (TDS) of raw sludge. The plan is to achieve this by introducing new advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) technology at two proposed sites—Ashford and Ham Hill. Furthermore, there is a possibility of recovering various resources, including ammonia.
