SYSTRA France, Eiffage Énergie Systèmes (lead), Saferail, and TGSO have been preparing for the complete modernization of the signaling system on the Paris-Lyon high-speed rail line.

Commissioned in 1981, the Paris-Lyon line is Europe’s oldest and busiest high-speed rail route, with up to 13 trains per hour. The line’s outdated signaling system is being upgraded to the interoperable ERTMS Level 2 by 2026. Spanning over 400 km, the project includes modernizing tracks and 58 technical buildings housing computer systems. SYSTRA, as project manager, oversaw the design, working drawings, and technical checks to facilitate this transition.

The signaling systems on the LGV Sud-Est line are now managed from a new control tower in Lyon. With the 409 km Paris-Lyon line upgraded, it is now more reliable, resilient, and interoperable, allowing trains from across Europe to operate on it. By 2030, this modernization will increase capacity, enabling up to 16 trains per hour in each direction.
