Standard Gauge Railway to be expanded in Kenya

The Kenyan government has considered an expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kisumu, Malaba, and Isiolo by June 2027.

The expansion project comes with a staggering price tag of US$15,317 million. This SGR project spans 2,746 km, stretching from Kisumu to Isiolo via Malaba. The railway line will traverse through Mariakani in Mombasa County, Lamu, and Isiolo. Additionally, there will be a connection to the SGR from Isiolo to the northeastern town of Moyale, which borders Ethiopia. To further enhance connectivity, the government plans to extend the SGR from Isiolo to Nairobi, establishing a link between Ethiopia, northern Kenya, and the country's commercial hub. Lastly, the SGR will be extended from Naivasha to Malaba, passing through Kisumu. The Kenya SGR consists of 7 segments:

  1. Mombasa-Nairobi (609 km)
  2. Nairobi-Naivasha (120 km)
  3. Naivasha-Kisumu (267 km)
  4. Kisumu-Malaba (130 km)
  5. Lamu-Lokichar-Nakodok (1,500 km)
  6. Nairobi-Moyale (700 km)
  7. Naivasha-Lokichar (460 km)
