The Government of Sri Lanka has announced the dredging of the West Container Terminal (WCT) of the Colombo port in Sri Lanka.
Conglomerate John Keells Holdings owns 34% of WCT, Indian Adani Group holds a 51% stake in WCT and the remaining 15% of the stake will be owned by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). The Adani Group also planned to build the East Container Terminal (ECT), however powerful port unions pushed for the terminal to be built by the state.
The first phase of the project is planned to be completed in the Q3 of 2024, the project will be completed by the end of 2025.
