Saudi Arabia launches US$ 15 billion 'Journey Through Time' masterplan

Royal Commission for Al-'Ula has launched the 'Journey Through Time' masterplan, which consists of five districts from AlUla Old Town in the south to Hegra Historical city in the north. The key focus is to protect, preserve and sustainably rejuvenate the 20 km long historical area of AlUla, including districts of AlUla Old Town, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, the Nabataean Horizon, and Hegra Historical City.

This US$ 15 billion plan will be procured under Public-private Partnership (PPP) model. The plan aims to achieve harmonious coexistence between nature and humankind, preserve the cultural legacy of AlUla and provide development opportunities for sustainable economic growth. Journey Through Time entails plans in the sectors of community, arts & culture, heritage & archaeology, nature & wildlife, agriculture, tourism & hospitality, and infrastructure.

The major development undertaken through the project are :

  • Fifteen new cultural assets including museums, galleries, and cultural centers across each district;
  • A 20 km long public realm – the Wadi of Hospitality, which will connect the five Districts and act as the green area; 
  • Rejuvenation of 9 km portion in the heart of the Cultural Oasis located in AlUla Old Town District;
  • A 46 km low-carbon tramway that will connect AlUla International Airport to the five districts;
  • Road as well as bicycle, equestrian, and pedestrian trails connecting all five districts;
  • Hotels and eco-tourism resorts in each district;
  • The Kingdoms Institute, which will be a hub for archaeological knowledge and research;  
  • Centralized and upgraded water supply system and upgraded wastewater treatment plant in Mughayra.
