The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) has delivered to the concessionaire Salaverry Terminal Internacional SA the accreditation certificate to expand the storage of anthracite coal extracted in mines in La Libertad and Ancash, Peru.

The port operator's proposed discretionary investment of US$10.94 million aims to boost the export capacity of anthracite coal from mines in La Libertad and Ancash. This will enhance Salaverry Port's operations by creating a dedicated storage area for anthracite, a high-grade coal. In 2023, the port handled 3.19 million tons of solid bulk, with anthracite comprising over 42.5% of this volume. PROINVERSIÓN awarded the project in 2018, with an estimated investment of US$228 million.

The storage expansion project at Salaverry Port Terminal includes creating an 8-ha area for anthracite coal storage, covering reception, storage, screening, and dispatch operations. This facility will receive coal transported by trucks from mining centers in La Libertad and Ancash. The development also involves building 1,350 m of paved and signposted access roads to ensure smooth vehicle traffic to the storage area. Construction will begin in August 2024, with the new infrastructure expected to be operational by Q1 of 2025.
