The Sacyr Concesiones Chile S.pA. has made the best offer for the Second Concession of Route 68, which connects the Metropolitan Region with Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, Chile.

The modernization of Route 68 includes the development of new works on a 141 km stretch, including 2.7 km of new third lanes and 8.3 km of new fourth lanes, as well as a new two-lane roadway 82.8 km long, leaving one of them reversible depending on the flow demand, the construction of the Lo Prado 3 and Zapata 3 tunnels, with two lanes each, which will allow each of the three roadways to have its tunnels available. Route 68 starts at Pajaritos Junction and extends to Valparaíso, passing through several municipalities including Estación Central, Lo Prado, and Viña del Mar. The highway's second concession includes Route 68, two secondary routes (Vía Las Palmas and Troncal Sur), and part of the “Nudo Pajaritos” project. Key upgrades include expanding to additional lanes near the Pajaritos and Costanera Norte Junctions, creating urban plazas in Pudahuel, and replacing the Mapocho River and Lampa estuary bridges.

Additionally, a 23,000 m² park featuring a 250 m² wetland interpretation center will be built in El Noviciado. Between the Lo Prado toll and La Pólvora interchange, a new two-lane roadway will be added, creating three two-lane roadways. The central lane will be reversible, allowing one side to operate with four lanes and the other with two, based on traffic demand. Two new tunnels, Lo Prado 3 and Zapata 3, each with two lanes, will also be constructed to give each road a dedicated tunnel.

The project will transition from a mixed payment system with gantries and manual booths to a fully automated free-flow system on Route 68, eliminating side tolls once construction is complete. For the Southern Trunk Road, the current toll collection system will remain under the new concession. Additionally, upgrades at La Pólvora and Valparaíso-Viña del Mar include the Rodelillo link modernization, improved access to Eduardo Pereira Hospital, and safety works along Las Palmas Highway.
