The Transport Division Manager of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Rwanda has publicly stated that discussions are ongoing with development partners and investors to explore the potential of implementing a cable car system in Kigali, the national capital, through a public-private partnership.
A study published last year by researchers from the University of Rwanda’s College of Science and Technology and Ondokuz Mayis University in Turkey proposed a five-line cable car system for the city to combat congestion, air pollution, mobility issues heightened by the increasing population and the construction of new roads being hindered by the hilly topography.
The study concluded that the system would be cost effective and technically feasible. However, the Transport Division Manager emphasised that a cable-car project would still require an independent feasibility study before progressing with development.
