The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has granted Provisional Commissioning for sector A of the Rutas del Loa Road Concession project, which includes the improvement and expansion of Route 25 to a dual carriageway with a length of 112 km located between the beginning of the Carmen Alto Link to the junction with Avenida Balmaceda, north of the current southern access roundabout to Calama.
The USD 327 million project with a concession period of 40 years, the new infrastructure benefits the cities of Calama, Sierra Gorda, Chuquicamata, San Pedro de Atacama, Chiu Chiu, Ollagüe and the surrounding areas. Section A of the concession included the development of the Carmen Alto Link, which replaced the level crossing that connected Route 5 and Route 25, as well as the Acceso Sur link to Calama, which connects to El Loa Airport. Among the works built for Route 25 are the intersections (Carmen Alto, Sierra Gorda Sur, El Tesoro Link, Dupont Link and South Access Link to Calama), two secondary overpasses (Calle Nueva 3 and Las Industrias), two railroad overpasses, at-grade return points through the median, rehabilitation and improvement of the pre-existing roadway, sanitation works, signage and road safety, lighting, pedestrian walkways, service roads, SOS telephones, landscaping in specific sectors and an area of general services and emergency care.
Additionally, a bypass of the old Route 25 was constructed in Sierra Gorda to prevent vehicular traffic from passing through the town, enhancing safety for residents and reducing travel times between Carmen Alto and Calama. The Rutas del Loa Road Concession contract also includes Section B, which corresponds to the new eastern bypass towards Calama.
