The Governments of Bulgaria and Romania has received appeals from the municipalities of Zimnicea and Turnu Magurele to connect the two banks of the Danube with new bridges in Romania and Bulgaria. This happened during Bulgarian Ambassador in Romania, Radko Vlaykov's visits to the municipalities.

In Zimnicea, the local authorities presented multiple arguments of why a bridge is necessary, including recalling that a Zimnicea - Svishtov bridge existed during the Roman Empire and insisting Bulgarian and Romanian governments pursue this 10-year-old project without futher delay. In Turnu Magurele, the local government also highlighted the importance of bridges for businesses, prosperity and contacts between people and the need for a bridge between Nikopol and Turnu Magurele.

In 2014, the governments of Bulgaria and Romania have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop two new bridges (Turnu Magurele and Nikopol and Calarasi and Silistra) over the River Danube under public - private partnership (PPP) model. In 2019, the Government of Romania announced the plans to launch a new bridge over the river of Danube and connect the cities of Zimniceain Romania and Svishtov in Bulgaria, also under PPP.
