The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has awarded a subsidiary of California-based Tutor Perini Corp. a US$47 million contract for a new visitor center project at Everglades National Park in Florida.

The new two-story Marjory Stoneman Douglas Visitor Center is designed to withstand 175 mph winds and a 15-foot storm surge. Without these improvements, the existing facilities damaged by Hurricane Irma would further deteriorate, limiting access to park activities, keeping vessel operations offshore, and causing congestion at the marina's concession area. Currently, a temporary visitor contact station is in use. The project also includes:

  • Sidewalks, plazas, and gathering areas around the visitor center;
  • A new entrance road;
  • A remote concession and storage building near the park's canoe/kayak launch;
  • Bringing site utilities up to code;
  • Demolition of portions of the existing bulkhead;
  • Construction of a new bulkhead at the park's marina and waterfront;
  • Dredging in Chokoloskee Bay;
  • Native landscape and rain gardens;
  • Multiple shallow, dry retention ponds for drainage next to parking lots and driveways;
  • A new gravel parking lot for canoers/kayakers at an existing grassy overflow parking area; and
  • Replacement of the existing floating dock system with a new system that has accessible ramps.

The visitor center, main parking lot, and surrounding areas will be raised between 2.3 feet and 5.4 feet to limit the impact of high tides, storms and seasonal flooding. Preconstruction activities are already underway, and substantial completion is scheduled for August 2025.
