PROINVERSIÓN will launch the tender process for the Choquequirao Cable Car project between February and April 2025 and is expected to be awarded between October and December 2025.
The project is currently in the structuring phase and will be developed under the co-financed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) modality, with an estimated investment of US$ 265 million (without VAT), to improve the access infrastructure to the Choquequirao Archaeological Monument from Cusco and Apurímac. That is, a private operator will be in charge of the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of a cable car and bus transportation system that will facilitate access and comfort for visitors. This will significantly reduce the travel time from four days to just one, since tourists (mostly young people between 20-35 years old) make the journey on foot (trekking) for several days and, in addition, the alternative of making the same journey by cable car.
Regarding the service, the cable car from Cusco (Yanama) to the MACH will have two sections: the first, 2.7 km long, will depart from the San Juan departure station to the Maizal intermediate station; the second, 3.7 km long, will connect Maizal with the arrival station in Abra Choquequirao (behind the MACH). The cable car from Apurímac (Huanipaca - Kiuñalla) will be 4.2 km long, crossing the Apurímac canyon to the Unión arrival station, located 500 meters from the Casa Sacerdotal sector.
