The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) has reported that the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) has planned to entrust the agency with the promotion and award of the project Construction of a Space Port (Spaceport) in the "El Pato" Air Base in the city of Talara (Piura), Peru.
This initiative will be implemented on a property owned by the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) under the Asset Project framework, with an approximate investment of PEN 1,000 million (US$ 255 million). The Spaceport project is designed to streamline the launch processes of rockets and spacecraft, facilitating both orbital flights (circling the Earth like satellites) and suborbital flights (rapid transport between continents without achieving a complete orbit). The dedicated platforms for these launches will be situated at the "El Pato Air Base" in Talara, Piura, chosen for its proximity to the Equatorial line and will be appropriately prepared, equipped, certified, and authorized for these specific purposes.
The Spaceport will feature terrestrial platforms for launching spacecraft into space, alongside a comprehensive infrastructure including a control center, hangars for preparation, integration, and validation, as well as taxi and take-off runways. All these facilities will be strategically located in a sparsely populated area. According to the Ministry, the project will bring direct benefits to the city of Talara, including improved access roads and increased tourism. Moreover, it is expected to elevate the Piura region's status as a key regional hub for space transportation. This Spaceport initiative is part of a larger group of eight projects, totaling over PEN 1,300 million (US$ 331 million), slated for execution under the supervision of PROINVERSIÓN, as planned by the MINDEF.
