The Government of Fiji has invited private partners to participate in the masterplan to develop the Nadi International Airport located 5 km from Nadi town on the western side of Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island.
The 2024 Masterplan identifies key capacity limitations:
- Additional parallel taxiways are required to improve terminal access, reduce runway occupancy and generally improve and provide additional capacity.
- Flight training is currently a significant component of both general aviation and overall air traffic movements, reducing airfield capacity for larger and commercially important operations. Ultimately flight training operations should be relocated away from Nadi Airport.
- Current Runway 09/27 is not long or structurally strong enough for any aircraft larger than Code C. This limits airfield capacity as all larger aircraft are required to use Runway 02/20. Current 09/27 180 metre strip width is ICAO non-compliant for 3c and 4c aircraft operations.
- Additional aircraft parking stands are required to meet future demand and will drive the development of other infrastructure areas.
- Some areas of the terminal are at or approaching capacity. These include the Domestic Terminal, Baggage Handling System, International Departures and Baggage Reclaim areas. To accommodate the increased passenger demand, the anticipated need for terminal space will rise from the current 27,500 sqm to 75,850 sqm by 2043.
- The Cargo and Freight facilities are undersized and reaching the end of their projected asset life. They also occupy prime real estate adjacent to the Terminal and contribute to increased road congestion.
The 2024 Masterplan sets out a phased development approach in which key works are undertaken in a sequenced manner, with the first stage of works targeting completion by 2028. The estimated capital requirement for the first stage of work is around US$ 250 million.
For Nadi potential development sites include:
- Terminal infill development at the Nadi Terminal Carpark (incorporating transit hotel and retail mixed-use opportunities).
- Commercial and mixed-use precinct development within the Fiji Airports Compound.
- Aviation Training and Development Precinct associated with the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy and the Fiji Airports Aviation Academy.
- Newtown and Wailoaloa Resort and Hospitality Precinct.
- Balance land areas within the North West Support Services Precinct.
- Fiji Airport Head Office Building and centralization of administrative functions.
