Chilean state-owned port operator Empresa Portuaria Valparaíso has launched an initiative to expand the Port of Valparaíso by doubling cargo capacity and modernizing existing infrastructure.
The endeavor, envisioning a US$600 million investment, aims to facilitate the annual mobilization of 2.3 million TEUs and over 3 million tons of breakbulk cargo. Additionally, plans include the addition of a dock catering to cruise ships and various cargo types. To minimize landscape and urban impacts, a proposal suggests halving the extension of the docking front on one side of the Pier. The extension of the docking front (sites 1, 2, and 3) will extend towards the Muelle Prat pool. The project includes the construction of a cruise ship dock capable of simultaneously serving two passenger ships. This multipurpose infrastructure will facilitate the transfer of breakbulk cargo when cruise ships are not in service, with cruise operations given priority.
