South Africa's Western Cape Government (WCG) Department of Health and Wellness has planned to redevelop the Tygerberg Central Hospital.
The existing Tygerberg Hospital, operational since 1976, has outlasted its intended lifespan by 20 years, underscoring the urgency for a new Central Hospital in the Western Cape. Despite its initial grandeur, maintaining the aging hospital has become financially unsustainable. The proposed 600-900 bed facility, to be located 18 ha west of Tygerberg Hospital, aims to resolve this issue. Importantly, Tygerberg Hospital will continue functioning during the new hospital's construction. The Western Cape Government plans to shift primary and secondary services to the new Belhar Hospital, reserving academic and tertiary services for the Central Hospital. This strategic restructuring aims to concentrate on academic services, given the presence of 3 higher education institutions on-site.
The provincial cabinet opted for the hospital's redevelopment in 2009. The project's feasibility study gained approval in November 2022 and is presently in the procurement phase of the public-private partnership (PPP) cycle. Construction of the Central Hospital is slated to begin in 2026 and conclude by 2030, with commissioning anticipated in 2031.
