The Government of Peru, through the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation (MVCS), and the Consortium Fypasa Construcciones SA de CV - Operadora de Ecosistemas SA de CV have signed the concession deal that allows the start of works of the project "Wastewater Treatment System of the Basin of Lake Titicaca ”.
The project represents a total investment of up to PEN630 million (US$185.213 million) that includes the construction of six wastewater treatment plants and the improvement of four existing treatment plants.
The winner of the public tender will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plants (PTAR) of the towns of Puno, Juliaca, Ilave, Ayaviri, Juli and Moho, as well as the operation and maintenance of existing wastewater plants in the cities of Azángaro, Yunguyo, Huancané and Lampa.
The project seeks to ensure the adequate treatment of wastewater generated in the localities with the greatest contribution to the Lake Titicaca basin, as well as maintaining 100% of the infrastructure in perfect condition during the concession period and the conservation of the environment.
PTAR Titicaca is the first decentralized public-private partnership (PPP) in the sanitation sector that takes place under the Co-financed Private Initiative modality, which will guarantee adequate public service during the next 30 years of the concession.
This will improve public health, reduce pollution in the basin, and promote the increase of economic activities, such as tourism, fishing, and commerce in the 10 localities in the area of influence.
