The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) has canceled the proposed US$300 million fiber-optic broadband system P3 project, which involved the installation of fiber optic cables, conduits, junction boxes, splice enclosures, and related appurtenances along the 550-mile Turnpike (885km) and extensions.
The commission issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the project in July 2017, shortlisting four bidders in November.
However, following negotiations with the shortlisted bidders, the commission has decided to drop the plan. It will instead pursue a combination of leased lines, using a microwave network west of state capital Harrisburg, and a new fiber-optic network to be built east of the city.
