The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) in the USA has decided to toll nine major bridges under public-private partnership (PPP) procurement despite receiving an increase in funding from the Federal government.
PennDOT expects increase of US$4 billion in road and bridge funds from the federal government over the next five years. The move of tolling the nine bridges despite the funds has been opposed and criticized by many local legislative bodies. The authority has already launched a procurement process seeking a private partner to replace the bridges under the 30-year PPP concession. Three companies are being asked to submit the formal proposal, after which PennDOT will choose one group.
The statehouse transportation committee urged to have legislative approval before applying tolls to the road. Local governments are expected to file a motion against PennDOT challenging the decision to pursue tolling.
