German laser fusion developer Marvel Fusion and the USA's Colorado State University (CSU) have created a public-private partnership to construct a USD150 million high-power laser and fusion research facility on the CSU Foothills Campus.
The initiative will include at least three laser systems, each equipped with impressive multi-petawatt peak power and an extraordinarily rapid repetition rate of ten flashes per second. The designated location for the new laser facility has been initially chosen in close proximity to CSU's established Advanced Beam Laboratory, situated on the CSU Foothills Campus. The design will incorporate flexibility to accommodate future expansion and the addition of more lasers. Pending the conclusive resolution of financial specifics by the CSU System Board of Governors, this partnership has the potential to position Fort Collins as a central hub for laser fusion exploration, yielding substantial positive outcomes for Colorado.
The project is targeted for completion in 2026.
