The Ministry of Public Works and Communication (MOPC) of the government of Paraguay has officially cancelled the tender for a private partner to modernise and construct a new terminal at Silvio Pettirossi Airport, the country's main national and international gateway, located at Luque and serving the capital city, Asunción.
The cancellation was requested by the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DINAC).
The tender was initially announced in 2014, and received three proposals for the project in June 2016. However, the Ministry's preference for a bidding team led by Sacyr was suspected of not adhering to correct procedure, leading the consortium to release a statement defending against allegations and MOPC to recommend that the tender be declared null and void in May 2017.
Despite efforts made by the government, the tender has been deemed impossible to continue. It is expected that the planned modernisation of the airport will be financed with DINAC funds, while the government will decide whether to construct a new terminal.
