The Public-Private Partnership Authority in Pakistan has approved the project proposal of the Karachi Circular Railway project. The scope of works involves the development of a 43-km dual-track urban rail mass transit system with 30 stations along the corridor covering the city.
The concession will be structured on a PPP basis, where the private sector will be responsible to finance the construction of the Civil Works, Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) components (including procurement of Rolling Stock), and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) of the railway project. The concession period will be 33 years including 3 years for the construction works.
The project is expected to serve 457,000 inhabitants of the city as well as provide benefits in sectors of vehicle operating costs, environmental protection, accidents & time savings, contribution towards promoting gender equality, and spill-over tax impact.
