The National Infrastructure Agency has started the operation of 856 m long Álvaro Mutis Jaramillo viaduct in Tolima, Colombia.
The Álvaro Mutis Jaramillo viaduct is located in Functional Unit 2 (Coello Cocora – Cajamarca urban pass), of the fourth generation (4G) 147 km Girardot – Ibagué – Cajamarca project between Cundinamarca and Tolima. The Álvaro Mutis Jaramillo Viaduct's structure was constructed using a system of successive cantilevers, which permits wider spans and has a considerable negative impact on the environment because it requires fewer piles to complete. While under construction, the project created approximately 1,100 job opportunities both directly and indirectly, and is now set to benefit roughly 800,000 individuals who primarily travel from Ibagué and Cajamarca.
Once the project is fully completed, a reduction of approximately 40 minutes is estimated on the national route that connects Bogotá with Buenaventura, in the section that corresponds to the department of Tolima.
