The National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has put into operation and maintenance the fourth generation project Conexión Norte, a 145-km road corridor, which connects the southwest and the center of the country directly with the ports of Cartagena and Barranquilla, through Puerto Berrío.

Conexión Norte is a crucial project in Bajo Cauca Antioqueño, linking the northeast of the department. Key features include 30 vehicular bridges to reduce travel times, such as:

  • Bridge 5 (255.24 m long, 33.2 m high),
  • Bridge 6 in Remedios (385.58 m long, 24.25 m high),
  • Bridge 16 over the Pocuné River in Segovia (238.5 m long), and
  • Bridge 18 (290.83 m long, 38.19m high).

With a US$1.9 billion investment, the project also involves upgrading 82 km of road between Zaragoza and Caucasia and a bypass in Caucasia. These works benefit over 747,000 residents in Remedios, Segovia, Zaragoza, and Caucasia. They reduce truck travel times from Cartagena to Medellín from 24 to 18 hours, with Medellín now 4 hours from Caucasia. This enhances connectivity between production centers in Cundinamarca, the Magdalena River Valley, Antioquia, the coffee region, southern Colombia, the Caribbean Coast, and Córdoba, Sucre, and Bolívar. Issues in unstable mining areas and slopes were resolved, and bridges 3, 5, 10, 11, and 21 were completed, connecting with the Magdalena 2 project.
