The General Directorate of Concessions of the Ministry of Public Works has received technical and economic offers from Costanera Group and ISA-Intervial for the second concession of Route 5, Temuco-Río Bueno section.
The project, which involves an investment of USD 836 million, will modernize Route 5 between Gorbea and Río Bueno, through a bypass to the city of Los Lagos. The project will modernize approximately 181 km of Route 5, including the new bypass to the city of Los Lagos, which extends through the municipalities of Gorbea and Loncoche, in the Province of Cautín; Lanco, Mariquina, Máfil, Los Lagos and Paillaco, in the Province of Valdivia; and La Unión and Río Bueno, in the Province of Ranco. Regarding the bypass to the city of Los Lagos, it will have a double expressway with two lanes in each direction and an approximate length of 15 km.
The new toll collection system will be introduced gradually, with manual tolls remaining for about 18 months to ensure service continuity. After this transition period, a hybrid system combining manual and electronic tolling will be implemented. Eventually, the route will shift to a fully electronic free-flow system, with toll gates strategically placed to prevent charges for local travel within the same commune. The project includes key infrastructure improvements to enhance local connectivity and improve the quality of life for nearby communities. Planned works outlined in the bidding rules include pedestrian walkways with universal access, designated sales areas, public service zones, exclusive areas for transporters, and service roads.
