The Ministry of Public Works has received Technical Offers for the New Penitentiary Establishment project of Talca in Chile.
This project entails spending USD 63 million on the facility's operation and fitment, which will house 2,320 prisoners. By having greater space for inmates and providing support services for social reintegration, health, and food, the jail will be able to offer improved security and better living conditions. The new facility, which is situated in Talca, will include 14 detention modules spread across three levels with a total size of about 63,570 m2. The Ministry of Public Works' Architecture Department created and constructed the facility, which was given provisional acceptance in 2023.
Partial operations are set to begin this year, with a prison population of around 400 prisoners. During the same period, rehabilitation work would commence and continue until 2026, when the facility would operate at full capacity. The bid received corresponds to Constructora San José, and the bidding process will proceed with the opening of economic offers on August 20, 2024. The prize will be presented in 2024.
