The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has announced a total investment pledge of more than PHP1 trillion (US$16 billion) from potential private partners for irrigation public-private partnership (PPP) projects in the Philippines.
NIA studies potential investment opportunities and develops types of income streams that will indicate such opportunities. These include aquaculture, hydroelectric power generation, solar panels in the reservoir, solar panels covering irrigation canals and wind power to generate electricity. NIA is exploring the possibility of mass water distribution and carbon credits, the latter will bring dollars to investors and at the same time solve the problems of climate change.
The irrigation PPP projects will accelerate the development of NIA infrastructure that will serve thousands of Filipino farmers and enhance the country's food security.
