The New Hanover County government is set to launch a request for proposals (RFQ) for the development of a new government center through a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.
The new infrastructure project will be built at the current government center at 230 Government Center Drive off South College Road. The project location was previously a 135,000 square feet shopping center of which 35,000 is unused. It was acquired and renovated for US$18.6 million by the county in 2002. The facility will require an additional US$20.3 million in repairs and upgrades over the next 20 years. The new government center would be resilient and be able to house the Emergency Operations Center and 911 Center.
The New Hanover County is set to issue RFQ for interested private developers to submit for a county administrative building and private development consisting of commercial, business and residential uses consistent with the city of Wilmington development goals. The project will be located in a federal Opportunity Zone that would make PPP a good scheme for the implementation.
