Webuild announced that the new Facchini 1 tunnel included in the route of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi - Genoa Junction Single Project has been activated.
Carried out by the General Contractor led by Webuild, under the auspices of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, and with support from engineering firm Italferr – both entities belonging to the Infrastructure Cluster of the FS Italiane Group – this endeavor is positioned along the railway segment connecting the Fegino and Polcevera junctions of the Genoa junction. This location serves as the ultimate mile granting access to the Ports of Genoa. The tunnel's rejuvenation entailed the complete dismantling of the existing historical tunnel, paving the way for a novel construction method for the new tunnel's establishment.
Stretching over a length of 137 m, the recently constructed tunnel has undergone an expansion and adjustment process to accommodate the passage of European standard freight trains (PC80/PMO3 gauge). This alignment with the developmental initiatives of the national railway infrastructure and the forthcoming integration with the Terzo Valico dei Giovi project has been the driving force behind these modifications. The reopening of Facchini Tunnel 1 bears the additional benefit of reinstating freight train pathways, which will revert to utilizing the former link, consequently relieving the alternative Genoa-Ovada route.
