Durham County Council has selected Developer Muse to work on ambitious plans to build a ‘strategic employment site’ at Aykley Heads by demolishing Council buildings, including County Hall, to make way for a new development.
With expertise in urban regeneration, the developer will contribute to refining detailed proposals for the large-scale redevelopment. Durham County Council had initially aimed to generate 4,500 jobs on the site and included three new office buildings in its original master plan. However, the plans have been adjusted following the approval of a new Durham University data center in January, which will create 15 jobs.
The Durham Innovation District is part of a broader strategy to boost the local economy, attract investment, and position Durham as a key player in the innovation sector. The development is anticipated to have a lasting positive impact on the community and the regional economy.
