The Ministry of Public Works launched the operation of the new passenger terminal at the Chacalluta Airport in Arica, Chile.
The project, executed by the concessionaire Sacyr, included the expansion of the terminal from 5,352 m2 to 12,184 m2. During this stage, 3 of the 5 new boarding bridges were opened (the other two will begin to operate when 100% of the works are completed) and 192 seats will be available in the boarding halls (a total of 510 seats will be delivered once all the works are completed). This airport handles approximately 300,000 passengers annually, despite being designed to accommodate up to one million travelers. Additionally, the runway has been extended to 2,800 meters, allowing for larger aircraft with higher capacity and greater tonnage. The final formalization process is nearing completion, with operations expected to begin in April 2025.
The terminal now features three additional airline counters, bringing the total to 16, along with 126 new parking spaces, increasing the total to 486. Additionally, three new aircraft platforms have been added, for a total of seven. This initiative, with a total investment of US$3.1 billion—$1.8 billion from the Concessions Directorate and $1.3 billion from the Airports Directorate—aims to enhance connectivity and support Chile's social, economic, industrial, and tourism development. A total of 19 airports will benefit from these improvements, including key infrastructure in Arica, Easter Island, Torquemada, Puerto Natales, and Teniente Marsh in Antarctica.
