Minister of Infrastructure of Brazil, Tarcisio de Freitas, has confirmed that the new concession of Presidente Dutra highway will incorporate Rio-Santos highway stretch.
The current concession of BR-116 / RJ / SP (Nova Dutra) is 402 km long and connects the two largest metropolitan regions of the country (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro). The current concessionaire´s CCR NovaDutra term for highway operation expires in 2021. After the expiry of the original concession, the scope of the new concession will be changed.
The new concession will consist of a 30-year operation of the highway system, infrastructure and public service recovery, operation, maintenance, monitoring, conservation, improvement implementation, capacity expansion, service level maintenance and user safety. The concession will be increased to 598.5 km and will include the stretch of BR-101 between the cities of Ubatuba (SP) and Itaguaí (RJ), known as the Rio-Santos Highway.
For Rio-Santos stretch, the Ministry of Infrastructure foresees the duplication of the road from Rio to the municipality of Angra dos Reis, with the remaining stretch, up to Ubatuba, with “capacity adequacy” works. The minister Tarcisio de Freitas is optimistic about the highway concession, with an auction scheduled for next year. He also says that it will be an "extremely competitive auction".
The new concession project is to be sent to the Federal Court of Accounts for approval.
The expected investment for the new concession is BRL 14 billion (US$ 2.57 billion). The investment includes the cost of new lanes construction, LED lighting and cameras.
